I had the opportunity to interview Camille Tate a freelance makeup artist. The interview was very informative, plus it was great to get her thoughts on certain techniques, products, and of course my favorite brushes.
So when did you first fall in love with makeup?
I would say when I was 15 years-old. Even though I could only wear lipstick, since my mom wouldn't let me wear a full face. I wore a dark lip, I mean really dark lip. The brand was "Wet & Wild" i believe it was #405 or #409 and it was only 0.99!
FCA:
What is your top five products that you like right now, that people may or may not be familiar with?
Camille:
Sleek Blemish Balm, it is an all over moisturizer. It can be used as a moisturizer or kind of like a foundation under powder, its just a tinted moisturizer, but it is a little heavier than most tinted moisturizer. Its by Sleek a London based company. Another product by Sleek is their contouring kit, so I use the contouring kit in the dark shade, umm also for eye brows you have to fill in your eyebrows. I use the Revlon ColorStay pencil so by the end of the day I am not walking around with half an eyebrow.
FCA:
You have two more, it could be anything lipstick, eye shadow, lip liner, or primer.
Camille:
I do like for everyday wear the e.l.f. eye lid primer not the liquid but the stick for everyday.
FCA:
Does it crease?
Camille:
No it does not crease. I also like Matte by MAC for an all over primer for photo shoots and for the weekend it is clear, it is not the MAC prep and prime, that is a different product.
FCA:
Currently what are the things you have on you in your cosmetic bag or purse? List them from off the top of your head.
Camille:
Well I have a cosmetic bag in my car.
FCA: Okay, then describe what in the cosmetic bag you carry in your purse (chuckle).
Camille:
So I have a small MAC compact it has about 4 or 5 colors a glittery pink, a green, an under eyelid color. I use that if I am on the the go, and if I need an all over look but I don’t have time; so I just pull the cosmetic bag out the car, which has everything in it. I have color pencils to go on my water line, I have mascara, powder, blush, and 2 tubes of lipstick. Umm what else do I have... a pencil sharpener, umm I do have a lip liner in there.
FCA:
Sounds like all the essentials. Now I do not feel so bad about my cosmetic bag in my purse.
Camille:
Yes I have a n entire bag to do a full face if I am out somewhere and do not have a face on. I have a whole little kit to do a full face of makeup. Oh yea, and I have cargo powder / crème foundation.
FCA:
okay so what’s in your purse?
Camille:
Cargo powder/foundation I have four lip glosses, I have soft lips (chapstick), a small kabuki brush, and hat is about is and lipstick to freshen up what I have on I also use my kabuki brush to dust across my face to take off shine rather than pack on more makeup, I also have rice papers for the shine around my "T zone".
FCA:
What is your favorite part about creating looks?
Camille:
You get see the transformation, and take them to an entirely different level. Sometimes you can make someone that is not so attractive, and places them on a level playing field with everyone else.
FCA:
When approaching clients what do you find the most difficult?
Camille:
Not the eyes, for me it is the eyebrows.
FCA:
Really, why do you find the eyebrows the most difficult?
Camille:
Acne is easy, they have some of the best concealers out here cover up acne. MAC has one of the best concealer when it comes to the intensity of coverage. Sleek is also good as well, they have a concealer kit with 2 different spot concealer and powder. But eyebrows define your face, if you do not fill in your eye brows correctly, or if you use the wrong color powder if you use black and they are supposed to be brown or eye brows an make make up pop or make it flat.
FCA:
What is your favorite line of brushes?
Camille:
I actually like the Sedona Lace brushes, I also have a complete set of mac brushes as well, I can tell the difference; the synthetic brushes are definitely better, I do not like totally soft brushes, I feel it doesn't work well for blending. But if you are packing on the eye shadow on at the base "synthetic" is great. As for soft brushes I think it kind of spread the powder around and that is where you get that little dusting under your eyes. I like the softer brushes for blending definitely the Sedona Lace brushes are softer than the mac brushes, I also have an e.l.f. brush that I love to death. I use it to create an outer v of the eyes, it is a pointed tapered brush.
FCA:
Who are some of your favorite makeup artist? Give me your favs that have been in the makeup game for a minute.
Camille:
Sam Fine of course he is awesome , I love Kevyn Aucoin,
FCA: I love his work
Camille:
I think the top makeup artist now that is crating looks that ranges from natural to dramatic , some of ther clients are La La , Brandy, Kelly Rowland, and I think she does Kim Kardashian sometimes her name is Sheika Daley, she is amazing so really awesome like her right now
FCA:
Is that the artist you like right now?
Camille:
Umm. Yea for me she the top one right now, correction one of the other makeup artist I like right now is Sue Devitt she’s an Australian makeup artist, a lot of people do not know about her here in the states, but her makeup line is very comparable to MAC, but her product are natural, and I like working with natural lines since a lot of people have sensitive skin and her powders and foundations are great for people with sensitive skin issues.
FCA:
Tell us about your sensitive skin issue that you had to deal with a few years ago?
Camille:
As you know MAC stands for "Makeup Artist Cosmetics" it is very heavy, if you request an ingredients list from for a tube of lipstick, you will get a full page, that’s how many chemicals are in mac, so mac caused a rash on my lips and blew them up, so yea can’t wear mac lipstick anymore. What I have noticed that things that are tested on animals I am highly allergic to, so cosmetics that are tested on animals I am not allergic too are : Cargo, Urban Decay, Stila, Sue Devitt, and Makeup Forever I can use.
FCA:
What is you favorite product from MakeUp Forever ,
Camille: Their foundation and concealer.
FCA:
Who are some of the local artist you have worked with in the cities you have lived in (Nashville, Chicago, Dallas)
Camille:
I have not worked with anyone here in Dallas yet, just because I have not been here for that long. In Nashville "A+ makeup artistry really taught me how to sculpt brows and how to clean up my make up kit. How make sure I take products out after it has been in my kit too long, and when I buy fresh makeup.
FCA:
Okay here is another question, how long should one keep makeup in their kit starting with foundation?
Camille:
Foundation, like the max should be 6 months
FCA:
What about eye shadow?
Camille:
Eye shadow is not as bad. I believe you can keep for a year, I have kept eye shadow for years, but that is because I do not use anywhere else, and you also have to clean your brushes.
FCA:
How often should you clean your brushes, after ever use, or every couple of weeks?
Camille:
Not every use, but at least once a week. If you have sensitive skin you should clean after every use.
FCA:
what kind of brush cleaner do you use?
Camille:
Brush cleaner from Walmart
FCA:
How long should you keep lipsticks?
Camille:
I don’t keep lipstick that long because my lips are the most sensitive area on my face. I break out so I only keep them or a couple of months and I have full lips anyway so lipstick does not last long.
FCA:
So for the average person, how long should they keep their lipstick?
Camille:
2 to 3 months
FCA:
How long have you been a makeup artist?
Camille:
Since 2008
FCA:
Is there anything else you would like to add or tell the FaceCandy Addicts?
Camille:
My biggest pet peeve not blending the highlight under your eye. People highlight under their eye and it is like 5 shade lighter than their normal skin tone. I think you really have to blend under your eyes. I know people have that paparazzi look gong on, but in pictures you can really tell you have on a mask of concealer. The word concealer means that you conceal things, and just the fact that you can see people concealer defeats the entire purpose of it.
FCA:
We wanted to know what is the best luminizer to wear under their foundation, or alone that give us that natural glow or light in our look?
Camille:
Bronzer. It doesn’t matter they do all are pretty much do the same. Now I can say some are not as pigmented as others, it just depends on who is using it. If someone is a novice and is not used to doing that luminizing affect, they may want to get a more expensive brand.
FCA:
Now they do have different types, that do not have that shimmer, or sheen look to it. I found one company that has it and it is amazing, it is a really cool product made by It Cosmetics “hello light illuminating powder” it is really natural and does not give you that bronze, sheen /shimmer look.
Camille:
I like sleek for people you don’t have to go to walgreens or cvs and buy your makeup, and be like this is all I can afford because I am just starting out in makeup. You can go online on www.Sleek.com, most of their products retail from $10 - $13 pretty reasonable and their products are highly pigmented for it to be reasonably priced. Nueutral palette, concealer, and brushes, you can buy an entire stater kit under 100 bucks from them and the shipping is like $10. You don’t have to wear mac, smashbox, or nars to have a great face. All you need is youtube and sleek makeup.
FCA:
Who's your favorite YouTube personality for makeup tutorials?
Camille:
I like this one person, she is at the top of my list for YouTube tutorials and her username is BeautyByJJ, there are some on YouTube that are dark complexion like myself and they apply their foundation like 2 shades lighter than what they really are. Because they brighten up their face so much with the highlighter under their eyes
FCA:
But why would they not want to bring out the deep rich chocolate or whatever their skin tone may be, the entire point of makeup is to enhance your natural beauty right?
Camille:
Right, but people don’t do that.
FCA:
That is a whole other issue I am not going to even go into that. Well Camille it has been awesome thank you for the interview, I may ask you to comeback and do a tutorial.
Camille:
Anytime!!!
